A National Initiative to Strengthen India's Shared Scientific Research Infrastructure
The Sophisticated Analytical & Technical Help Institutes (SATHI) programme is an initiative of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, aimed at strengthening India's scientific research ecosystem through the establishment of advanced, shared research infrastructure.
The programme seeks to bridge the gap between the growing demand for sophisticated analytical facilities and their availability across academic institutions, research organisations and industries.
Under this initiative, state-of-the-art scientific instruments, advanced analytical technologies and professional technical expertise are brought together under one roof, creating an integrated platform for research, innovation and technology development.
By promoting shared access to high-end scientific infrastructure, SATHI enables researchers and innovators to undertake complex scientific investigations without the need for individual institutions to independently establish and maintain expensive facilities.
The programme represents a national effort towards making advanced scientific infrastructure more accessible, efficiently managed and widely utilised.
The SATHI programme is designed to achieve the following strategic goals.
Provide equitable access to sophisticated scientific instruments and analytical facilities for researchers across institutions, irrespective of their individual infrastructure capabilities.
Maximise the utilisation of high-value scientific equipment through centralised management, professional operation, systematic maintenance and reduced instrument downtime.
Enable high-quality fundamental and applied research by providing access to advanced characterisation, analytical and experimental capabilities.
Establish a common platform where academic institutions, national laboratories, start-ups and industries can access scientific expertise and infrastructure to address research challenges.
Develop technical competencies among researchers, students and industry professionals through specialised training, workshops and hands-on exposure to advanced scientific instrumentation.
Promote a professionally managed, transparent and financially sustainable model for operating shared scientific facilities, ensuring their continued availability.
The programme is intended to serve a broad spectrum of India's scientific, academic and industrial communities. By bringing these diverse stakeholders onto a common platform, SATHI facilitates interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and collaborative innovation.
A defining feature of the SATHI programme is its emphasis on professionally managed, shared scientific facilities. Unlike conventional institution-specific laboratories, SATHI facilities are designed to serve a wider community of users through a structured and transparent access mechanism.
The programme promotes:
This approach helps reduce unnecessary duplication of expensive scientific infrastructure while expanding access to advanced research capabilities.
Pushing the boundaries of fundamental research.
Fostering indigenous technology development.
Driving industrial growth and practical applications.
The SATHI programme plays an enabling role in strengthening India's capacity for scientific discovery, indigenous technology development and industrial innovation.
By connecting advanced infrastructure with scientific talent and industry requirements, it supports an environment where ideas can progress from fundamental research towards practical applications.
The initiative also contributes to the development of skilled scientific manpower, stronger institutional collaborations and a more inclusive national research ecosystem.
"Through its network of shared facilities, SATHI seeks to ensure that access to sophisticated scientific infrastructure becomes an enabler of innovation rather than a limitation."
